Russia ( Europe Brief News): Russia condemns Israeli strikes on Iran as illegal, urging diplomatic solutions and highlighting Tehran’s adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Iran has made “clear statements” about its desire to meet with US representatives and its commitment to uphold the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, according to a ministry statement shared on Telegram.
“The continuing intensive attacks by Israel on Iran’s peaceful nuclear sites are illegal in terms of international law and create unacceptable threats to international security and push the world to a nuclear catastrophe…,”
the ministry said in a statement posted on Telegram.
The statement added that Moscow was awaiting “unvarnished” evaluations of the harm Israeli attacks had done to Iranian nuclear installations from the International Atomic Energy Agency.
“Moscow supports this stand and firmly believes that the settlement that is being sought can only be reliably achieved through diplomacy and negotiations,”
it said.
The statement also said Moscow was waiting for the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide
“as soon as possible a detailed written report … with an objective and unvarnished assessment of damage”
to Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Russia’s earlier plan to keep Iranian uranium in Russia is still on the table, the Kremlin said Monday, adding that it was prepared to mediate the dispute between Israel and Iran.
How might Russia’s support for Iran affect its relations with Israel and the US?
Russia has strained relations with Israel, a nation with which it has significant political, economic, and cultural links, after denouncing Israeli strikes on Iranian targets as unlawful and unwarranted.
Given that Israel considers Iran to be a serious security threat, Moscow’s criticism and support of Iran’s stance run the risk of alienating Israel.
To prevent a total break with Israel, Russia has so far refrained from providing direct military assistance to Iran. Instead, it has made certain concessions to Israel’s security concerns, such as postponing the delivery of sophisticated weapons to Iran.
Russia’s support for Iran is in opposition to American interests because Israel is a crucial partner of the United States, especially in light of Iran’s regional dominance and nuclear aspirations. Russia’s position, which condemns Israeli actions while urging diplomatic solutions.
