EBN – Taiwan has responded to billionaire Elon Musk’s statement, stating that the island is an “integral part” of China.
Foreign Minister Joseph Wu conveyed Taiwan’s position, emphasising that it is “not for sale” and firmly rejecting Musk’s characterisation.
This controversy emerged during a business summit when Musk likened Taiwan to Hawaii and declared it a component of China.
China has stressed its authority over the island for so long, leading to rising tensions between them over recent years.
Moreover, it recently made several air and naval training at the Tai borders. The move has become repetitive and is globally viewed as a show of armed forces.
Furthermore, Taiwan reported the presence of over 40 Chinese military aircraft and approximately 10 ships in its territorial waters.
Billionaire Entrepreneur Creates Controversy
Elon Musk has previously drawn the ire of Taiwan’s government with his remarks.
In October, he suggested that the Beijing-Taipei dispute could be resolved by granting China some level of control over Taiwan.
During an interview with the Financial Times, he proposed a potentially “reasonably palatable” arrangement between the two governments.
Taiwan’s authorities firmly rejected this idea, asserting that freedom and sovereignty are not negotiable.
Joseph Wu also took to X to make a pointed statement, as he said, “Hope Elon Musk can also ask the CCP to open X to its people.”
Musk’s social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, is banned in China.
Taiwan: Equivocal Rejection
Taiwan’s foreign minister had previously commented that China’s military drills were intended to influence Taiwan’s elections.
He further asserted that the decision regarding Taiwan’s future should rest with its citizens rather than external pressures.
Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla, maintains a significant manufacturing presence in Shanghai.
While visiting China, Musk discussed with high-ranking Chinese officers. Additionally, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Tesla is considering expanding within the country.
Musk’s stance and activity in China have drawn attention, particularly because of the current tension between the US and China.
These tensions continued although there were diplomatic talks and disapprovals on several issues, including Taiwan, that remain a big obstacle between both powers.
