Thousands of Croatians were hoping that the squad led by star midfielder Luka Modric could repeat the success of 2018 and reach the World Cup final – and even go one better.
Finalists as recently as 2014, the Argentines will try to land a third-world crown after 1978 and 1986.
On Sunday (December 19), they will face either defending champions France or surprise underdog Morocco, the first Arab country in a World Cup semi-final, who play each other on Wednesday (December 14).
The Argentina captain is one win away from winning the World Cup trophy and cementing his status as the greatest to ever play the game. The one title that has eluded Messi, that sets him apart from so many of the greats who have come before him, is his for the taking on Dec. 18.
