London, Europe Biref News – UEFA is planning to take a call to switch this season’s Champions League Finals away from ST Petersburg as the tension is rising of Russian invasion to Ukraine.
Russia has massed more than 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border and even sent troops to Sepatrists States in Eastern Ukraine indicating the invasion is coming.
The US and UK have already warned that if Russia invades Ukraine, Russia will have to face a lot of sanctions .
Uefa said “ We are closely monitoring the situation and any decision would be made in due course if necessary”. As the tension increases between two neighbours, it is highly unlikely that Uefa will attempt to host a game at St Petersburg.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said In the house of commons “ There was no chance of holding a football tournament in a Russia that invades sovereign countries”.
Nadine Dorries , Cultural Secretary said “ I have serious concerns about the sporting events in Russia, such as the champions league final, and will discuss with the governing bodies”.
She further added that we would not allow Russian leader Putin to exploit events on the world stage to legitimise his illegal invasion of Ukraine.
European Football’s governing bodies are concerned about the current situation and looking for a possible venue to be available for Champions League finals on a short notice. They will announce the venue as soon as they come up with a viable option.
London Ready to Host CL finals
Mayor of London Sadiq khan said that hosting sports games should be a privilege rather than a right. The authorities must take immediate action to take the champions league finals away from Russia.
He added further that London stands ready to host the champions league final games if needed.
Uefa has already cancelled the Youth League last 16-tie between Dynamo kyiv and Sporting Lisbon. The match was set to be played in Kyiv on 2nd of March.
Tensions in the region have escalated further this week with Russian president Vladmir Putin ordering troops into two rebel-held regions in eastern Ukraine, after recognising them as Independent States.
