Russia security services declared the attest of a Ukrainian citizen on suspicion of stealing state secrets.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) confirmed that the detainee has been collecting secret information about “the latest weapons and their secret technical documentation”.
The FSB added the suspect had been trying to search for “employees of Russian defence enterprises” and recruit them as informers.
“Their goals were recruiting the Russians and obtaining from them legally protected information about promising developments in the field of small arms,” the statement said.
The security forces arrested the suspect in Tula, a home to a military weapons factory that produces guided missiles. It also advanced automatic and sniper rifles.
Russia also says the suspect had been working for the Ukrainian intelligence services, without giving further details.
Russian authorities opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
However, Ukraine’s foreign ministry has not commented on the arrest.
Last week, an employee at British embassy in Berlin was arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia.
The British diplomat was passing on documents for Russian intelligence in exchange for cash.
The police arrested the suspected diplomat, identified only as David S, at his Potsdam apartment at 2.20pm on Tuesday,
Moreover, they searched his home and embassy workplace on the same day.
“The accused received a cash payment in an unspecified amount in return,” German prosecutors said.
“The suspect has been spying since November 2020 “at the latest”.
Germany’s Foreign Ministry said it was taking the case seriously, adding that spying on
allied states on German soil is unacceptable.
A spokesman for the ministry said that it would closely monitor the German public
prosecutors’ investigations.
