EBN – Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov confirmed that he has submitted his resignation letter to the parliamentary chairman.
The move marks a significant transformation within the country’s defence leadership since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The announcement of Reznikov’s departure came after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared his decision to replace the current wartime defence minister. Zelenskiy proposed Rustem Umerov, a prominent figure from the Crimean Tatar community, as Reznikov’s successor.
Resignation Letter Reflects Ukraine’s Protective Role
In his resignation letter, Reznikov reflected on his 22-month tenure as Ukraine’s Defence Minister.
He commended the country’s unwavering resilience in the face of Russian aggression. Reznikov also highlighted the Ministry’s effective lobbying endeavours that resulted in securing crucial military assistance from Western allies.
“Over 50% of the temporarily occupied territories by Russia have already been liberated,” Reznikov posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Every day our defenders are moving forward,” he added.
Reznikov emphasised the pivotal role of Ukraine as a protective barrier for Europe in the East. He further underscored the importance of establishing enduring partnerships with key allies to ensure genuine security guarantees.
Defence Minister Tenure Full of Challenges
His tenure as Defence Minister encountered wartime controversies, including allegations of inefficiencies in procuring essential supplies like food and clothing. Furthermore, some military aid NGOs also criticised bureaucratic red tape that slowed down aid delivery.
However, Reznikov consistently and unequivocally denied any wrongdoing.
In his resignation letter, Reznikov asserted that the defence procurement and acquisition procedures underwent substantial reforms during his time in office. He maintained that he had successfully accomplished the objectives set for him when he assumed the role nearly two years ago.
Reznikov’s resignation and the proposed appointment of Rustem Umerov mark a significant shift within Ukraine’s military leadership. It also comes as the country continues to suffer from the ongoing conflict in its eastern regions.
