Kyiv, Europe Brief News – Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused 1 million Ukrainian Refugees who displaced to other countries. At the same time, Russia is approaching to capture Kyiv as the invasion has officially entered into its second week. Russia seems to be lacking in its tactics so far as its main assault force stalled for days on a highway north of Kyiv.
The United Nations claimed that close to 1 million refugees have already fled Ukraine. Hundreds of Russian Soldiers and Ukrainian Civilians have lost their lives. Moreover, Russia is under immense pressure as Sanctions galore with the aim to isolate Russia and its economy.
Before the start of the invasion, Western countries predicted that the Kremlin was planning to swiftly take control of the Capital city Kyiv but it’s been more than a week and Russian forces only managed to capture Kherson.
Britain’s Defence Ministry said in an Intelligence update “ The main body of the large Russian column advancing on Kyiv remains over 30 km from the centre of the city having been delayed by staunch Ukrainian resistance, mechanical breakdown and congestion”.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky is still in Kyiv and sharing videos on an occasional basis to let people know what is going on in the city. In his last message, he said “we have nothing to lose but our own freedom”.
Second Round of Talks
The situation took a dramatic turn as 1 million Ukrainian Refugees left their country to take refuge in neighbouring countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov characterised the western response to Russia’s action as “hysteria”, which he said would pass soon. He also mentioned that he is looking forward to the second round of peace talks with Ukrainian officials on Thursday. The first meeting in Belarus produced no significant results.
Only Belarus, Eritrea, Syria and North Korea voted against an emergency resolution at the UN General Assembly condemning Russia’s aggression.
In Beijing, the Organizer asked Russian and Belarusian athletes to go back home from the paralympic games.
The Organizers said “To the Para athletes from the impacted countries, we are very sorry that you are affected by the decisions your government took last week in breaching the Olympic truce. You are victims of your government actions”.
Russian forces are trying to manoeuvre their tactics as they did not get the desired results they were looking for. Russia is now being more violent in its approach and bombarding cities with no fear Whatsoever.
Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said “ In just seven days, one million people have fled Ukraine, uprooted by this senseless war. I have worked in refugee emergencies for almost 40 years and rarely have I seen an exodus as rapid as this one”.
