Texas (Europe Brief News): The UK based Nanotechnology company, Nanoco technologies ltd. filed a patent infringement lawsuit against LG Electronics in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The legal complaint claims that LG wilfully infringed Nanoco’s patents related to its cadmium-free quantum dot technology used in televisions.
The Runcorn-based manufacturer of quantum dot technology, Nanoco launched a patent infringement lawsuit against defendants LG Electronics Inc and LG Electronics USA Inc in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on April 25, 2025. Nanoco accuses LG of deliberate unauthorized usage of their patented quantum dot technology in television products.
Nanoco has hired an international IP law firm based in Dallas, Texas, USA, Caldwell, Cassady and Curry (CCC) to represent it in patent enforcement and litigation. CCC was one of the legal firms that were involved in Nanoco’s successful litigation against South Korean electronics giant, Samsung, in 2023 over intellectual property breaches which resulted in a $150 million payout by Samsung.
Nanoco filed a lawsuit which claims deliberate patent infringement by the defendants and requests both permanent stoppage of unauthorized actions and compensation through monetary damages. Nanoco has not yet revealed the amount of damages it seeks through this lawsuit.
The lawsuit claims infringement of Nanoco’s US Patent No. ‘s: 7,588,828; 7,803,423; 7,867,557; 8,524,365. The four US patents owned by Nanoco regarding their unique synthesis method for cadmium-free quantum dots.
The lawsuit claimed that both LG Electronics, Inc. and LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc., are involved in the sale and distribution of components and fully assembled units for the display market, specifically televisions utilising quantum dots to significantly enhance the viewing experience of the user.
A world leader manufacturer of quantum dot technology, Nanoco’ chairman Dr Jalal Bagherli said that “Nanoco proved the value and validity of its Intellectual Property as part of the Samsung litigation process. At that time, we reiterated our intent to aggressively pursue other potential infringers of our IP to ensure a fair outcome for shareholders of Nanoco.”
“Although there is potential for compensation, engaging in litigation presents substantial inherent risks, and the board must evaluate the benefits against the costs. In this case, we feel that the possible rewards justify the expenses of initiating legal action,”
he further stated.
He continued that
“Nanoco remains receptive to discovering a mutually beneficial commercial resolution, but pursuing this action is appropriate at this time in the best interests of the company and its shareholders to protect one of our essential assets.”
What are quantum dots and what do they do?
They are nano-materials that are 1000 times smaller than human hair, which improve the color and picture quality of Television when light passes through them by enhancing the range of colors visible to the human eye. Quantum dots serve as fundamental technologies in contemporary television manufacturing because of their exceptional output.
Most quantum dots contain cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, but Nanoco is the first one to develop and patent a way to produce cadmium-free quantum dots, which are safer and environmentally friendly.
