London, Europe Brief News – The price of train tickets is expected to be reduced by up to half. The government will offer cheaper travel in April and May to alleviate some of the stresses on the economy.
As part of the “Great British Rail Sale,” the Transport Secretary announced price reductions on more than one million train tickets. For the Department of Transport (DfT), this is a step that will aid families struggling to keep up with growing costs and inflation and increase domestic tourism.

Historically cheap half-price train tickets
As the first of its type, the offer is projected to lower fares on specific Manchester-to-Newcastle trips to £10 and reduce prices on some London-to-Edinburgh seats below £22.
In an advertisement for the sale, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps remarked, “We’ve had two years of experiencing life virtually. Finally, a chance to see our wonderful nation has presented itself.
Officials stated that granting half-price train tickets was “one of the ways” the Government was assisting families with the cost of living, having previously announced steps to defer energy prices and provide council tax concessions for eligible households. What you need to know is provided here.
When is the discount available?
From April 25th through May 27th, various train trips will be marked down significantly. The majority of the tickets are half off.
From April 30 to May 2, London Euston station and the southern terminus of the West Coast central route will be suspended for a long holiday weekend. More generally, high-demand hours of the day will be exempted from the offer.
The cost changes according to demand and route, much like an airline ticket. Following are some reduced fares:
- Some trains on the LNER offer one-way Edinburgh-London tickets for only £22. The flat rail sale ticket between London and Leeds is £15.
- It costs £10.30 to go from Manchester to Newcastle by train (TransPennine Express).
- It costs £12.60 to cross the country from Birmingham New Street to Bristol Temple Meads.
- The fare between Wolverhampton and Liverpool (West Midlands Trains) is £5.25.
How to buy these train tickets?
Half-price train tickets will be available starting Tuesday, April 19th, for travel between April 25 and May 27. The Rail Delivery Group said tickets for selected advance rates would be available from 10 am on the National Rail website. The DfT advises customers to check nationalrail.co.uk/railsale for savings. Then book using one of these methods:
- Direct with the operator simplifies problems and may qualify for a loyalty benefit, e.g. LNER Perks.
- If you prefer a different website, you may purchase CrossCountry via a different operator.
- The Trainline, for example, costs a fee but automatically “splits tickets” if it saves you money.
