Kyiv, Europe Brief News – President Volodymyr Zelensky pleaded Western powers to let Ukraine swiftly become a member of the European Union and remove Russia from the SWIFT International electronic banking system during the ongoing crisis.
Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video “Residential buildings destroyed by missiles and artillery are the final argument for the world to stop the occupational invasion together with us”.
He further added “I say it as frankly as it can be, the Ukrainian people deserve and have the right to get membership of the European Union. This will be the main evidence of support for our country”.
He suggested that he has been in contact with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen. He asked them to take a final call over Ukraine’s EU inclusion.
Michel said on twitter “Ukraine and it’s people are family, concrete support is on its way. Zelensky also urged Germany and Hungary to show some bravery and take a call to eliminate SWIFT for Russia.
He said “ The anti war coalition is working. Defensive weapons and equipment are arriving in Ukraine. We have almost unanimous support from the EU on cutting Russia from SWIFT”.
EU Top leaders offering support
Zelensky also mentioned that he has been receiving several support calls from the EU leaders including Germany’s Emmanuel Macron , Swiss’s Ignazio Cassis and among others who have offered assistance to Ukraine to fight against Russian forces.
The Western allies are pondering cutting SWIFT from Russia , SWIFT has been transferring money from bank to bank around the world. It is one of toughest calls that western allies have to make which can be severely damaging for Russia’s economy immediately and in the long term.
This western move can remove Russia from most of International transactions and can dent the Russian economy In few days time.
In his message to the world and western powers, Zelensky blamed Russian forces for hitting civilians and destroying the infrastructure.
He further said that the Ukrainian forces have successfully defended the country so far by retaliating bravely against the Russian army. The Russian force thought that they would easily capture the Capital and would be able to take control of the situation.
Russian troops stormed towards Kyiv and street fighting broke out as city officials asked residents to take shelter under the metro station. Zelensky refused to leave the country and said he will resist and will fight till the end to defend its state.
