EBN- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said an agreement between Israel and Hamas to cease fire in Gaza appeared to be within reach after months of negotiations.
Scholz expressed his hope for a quick agreement between Israel and Hamas regarding the release of the “hostages.”
“The brutal crime committed by Hamas on October 7, 2023 is still fresh in everyone’s mind. We are aware of how difficult any agreement with the terrorist organization Hamas is for Israel.
However, the lives of the hostages must now be the top priority,” the Social Democratic Party politician was quoted as saying in a statement.
“Since there are a large number of German citizens among the hostages,” Scholz added.
The statement continued, quoting German Chancellor, that after long months of painful negotiations, it seems that an agreement is imminent, noting that it provides an opportunity to conclude a truce that will help alleviate the suffering in the Gaza Strip at last.
For his part, the Qatari mediator confirmed that reaching a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip is imminent.
Along the same line, the Hamas Movement confirmed that a Gaza cease-fire and prisoner swap agreement is in “its final stages.”
Israel has continued a genocidal war on Gaza, which has killed more than 46,600 people, most of them women and children, since Oct. 7, 2023, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Army Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on Gaza.
