Brasilia, Europe Brief News- Brazilian security forces regained control of Congress after it was stormed by hundreds of far-right protesters.
Supporters of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro violently stormed to the Supreme Court and police fired tear gas when demonstrators wrapped in the national flag surrounded the presidential palace.
Video depicted damage to an office in the presidential palace, as well as broken windows in the country’s highest court.
Bolsonaro, who is in the US, lost the presidential election to left-wing veteran Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in October.
The former president also tweeted to condemn the “invasions of public buildings”.
His supporters are refusing to accept he lost the election and have been calling for military intervention and Lula’s resignation.
Lula, who is on an official trip to Sao Paulo state, called Sunday’s rioters “fanatic fascists” and vowed to punish them.
Ibaneis Rocha, the governor of Brazil’s capital district, said more than 400 protesters involved in the demonstrations and breaches have been arrested.
He said authorities continued to work to restore order. Rocha described the day’s events as acts of terrorism.
The incidents, which recalled the Jan. 6, 2021, invasion of the U.S. Capitol, come amid disinformation about the election, aimed mostly at Lula.
