A parliamentary report has strongly criticised UK’s COVID response including delay to lockdown early last year.
The report said that UK’s delay in imposing a lockdown early last year was “one of the most important public health failures” in the country’s history.
The 151-page report also said that UK’s failure cost thousands of lives.
“The UK, along with many other countries in Europe and North America made a serious early error in adopting this fatalistic approach and not considering a more emphatic and rigorous approach to stopping the spread of the virus as adopted by many East and Southeast Asian countries,” according to the report.
The “gradual and incremental approach” to non-pharmaceutical interventions cost lives, it added.
The review was based on hours of testimony from more than 50 witnesses, including advisers on government policy, health and science.
More than 138,000 people have died from the coronavirus in the UK, one of the world’s highest death tolls.

Covid-19 was the top ten biggest cause of death in UK, amid concerns of a new wave of the virus.
The virus was the ninth biggest cause of death in the country in July and the 26th in June.
However, Covid is still the leading cause of death over the course of the past 15 months in the UK.
Heart disease remains the biggest cause of death. However, flu and pneumonia remain above Covid as a cause for a second month.
